I’ve been compiling a list of all the “slice-and-code” companies for myself, and came across Smashing Magazine. Smashing did all the work for me, and this is a very thorough list of all the services available with a reliable/verified presence. PSD2HTML seems to be the best establishment (in my opinion), primarily because everything is done in-house. I read elsewhere that they often provide training to make sure employees understand best practices. I’m sure it would be difficult to maintain consistency between all developers involved. Most other similar companies seem to utilize networked (international) designers who hand-off work as it gets busier. This approach certainly allows you to be a 24-hour business, because people are awake somewhere around the globe to help.
Now, why would I post a list of companies who offer similar services? What do I do differently, and how can I compete with these unrelenting, “globalized” work-horses? I can’t compete when it comes to banging out markup and CSS for the masses. What I offer is a professional, and personal no-hassle experience. Once we establish a business relationship, you can call me on the phone and ask for something to be turned-around in 6 hours if you need it. It’ll cost a little more, and you can be sure I’ll give you what you need— it’ll be in your hands to finalize and to push live to production sooner. There’s no delegated “trouble ticket” system here. This isn’t what I want to boast as the norm, though. Other services include taking your existing Web site and fixing it: content updates, CSS clean-up, “TABLES2CSS,” and more. Enough about me! Check out the list below and let me know if I missed anything important.
The companies and designers listed below do not design web-sites; instead they convert drafts and sketches (mostly in the Photoshop-format, .psd) into the (X)HTML-Code (with CSS-styling). The prices depend on the desired processing time. The faster you’d like to get the work done, the more expensive the coding will be. Some service providers offer optional extras - for instance, AJAX-Scripting and further interactivity.
